Obituary

Richard Bunkley, a forty year resident of Houston, Texas, entered eternity at Stephens Memorial Hospital, Sunday, January 27, 2008, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 30th, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Don Bearden and Kevin Mitchell officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, January 29th, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  Services have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.

He was born Richard Leigh Bunkley, December 22, 1942, in Breckenridge, Texas, to H.L. Bunkley Jr. and Claudine Ellis Bunkley.   He attended school in Breckenridge, graduating in 1961. Upon graduation, Richard entered the United States Air Force, where he was a Communications Specialist.  From 1961 to 1967, he was stationed in California, Vietnam and Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas.   Richard was honorably discharged in 1967.   During his life he worked for General Dynamics, Auto Convoy, Big Mac Trucking and retired from Garrett Trucking in Houston, Texas in November, 2007.   At the time of his death he was a resident of Breckenridge.

Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. H.L. Bunkley Sr. and Mr. & Mrs. Collie Ellis; his mother, Claudine Bunkley; brother-in-law, Billy Mitchell; and a nephew, B.J. Mitchell.

Richard is survived by his father, Leigh Bunkley Jr. of Breckenridge; one sister, Deborah Mitchell of Breckenridge; three nephews, Mike Mitchell of Breckenridge, Kevin Mitchell & Wife, Tresa, and their children, Destinee, Chandler and Leigha of Midland, Marty Mitchell & Wife, Penny and their children, Destiny, Daxton, Dakotah and Dawson of San Antonio, and a great-niece, Mackynzie Mitchell of Little Rock, AR. Richard left behind many cousins, but Linda Oliver of Bridgeport held a special place in his heart.

Richard's greatest love was astronomy.   He found great joy in staying up all night with his astronomy group and best friends, Tom Fox, David Schmidt, Don Pierce, Kenneth Drake and Kurt Oliver, at many locations around Texas.   However, Fort Griffin, near Albany was by far the location of choice.
